In My Own Words
I spend my off-season doing: Lots of work around the house, training for next road cycling season and working to expand knowlege of the sport of cycling.
My goals and expectations for 2012 are: To improve on my season results from 2011, work toward upgrading my road category, be more consitent during races and most importantly continue to develop a more positive outlook on bike racing regardless of results.
I started racing because: I found shortly after buying my first road bicycle as an adult I couldn’t keep myself from riding as hard and fast as possible. It didn’t take long until I decided to give racing a try.
My cycling mentors and/or influences are: My coach Gordy Paulson and friend Tom Starr, a MadCity Velo Club racer.
I consider my finest moment on the bike to be: Leading former teammate Greg Ferguson (Trek-Midwest) across a sizable uphill gap in the 2009 Flambeau 40 road race in Park Falls, Wis. Greg went on to stay in that breakaway and finish third.
The one thing I’ve done on a bike that I will never do again: Allow myself to be in a position to be knocked off my bike in a large pack by a careless racer — if I can help it.
When I’m not on my bike, I like to: Work with the cyclists and athletes I coach at Speed Cycling, Fitchburg, Wis. Also, I truly enjoy being at home with my wife Gale.
Something you probably don’t know about me is: As a news reporter I covered the Brown’s Chicken Murders case in Palatine, Ill for the Chicago Sun-Times News Group. The case has been the subject of an MSNBC news feature. And, that I was published in the Chicago Sun-Times on more than one occassion.
