Hot times outpace hot temps at State TT

Otto, Clauss post fastest mens, womens 40K times, respectively

MILTON — Temperatures approaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit didn’t slow down the action July 16 at the USA Cycling State Time Trial Championship.

The event, hosted by KS Energy Services/Team Wisconsin, drew 115 riders in categories ranging Juniors to Masters 65+, and perhaps the only thing hotter than the speed in this race against the clock was the competition.

Hellpap won the category with a time of 59:47.60.

Several podium places were separated by seconds.

In the Pro 1/2 category, less than a second divided second and third place as IS Corp Cycling’s Josh Gillingham nipped Kevin Pomasl, KS Energy Services/Team Wisconsin, with a time of 56:32.50 to 56:33.30. Brian Rach, Nova Cycle Sports Foundation, took the top spot in the Pro 1/2 category with a scorching time of 55:31.90.

Arrietta Clauss, MadCity Velo Club, won the Women/Cat 4 division with a time of 1:02:38.70. Rachel Roessingh, IS Corp Cycling, finished in second place at 1:08:14.70 and Karen Burrows, unattached, rounded out the podium at 1:17:35.80.

Jeff Otto, Lamb Little Racing, poured in the fastest time of the day in a blazing 53:04.90, in the Masters 40 to 44 category. He bested his nearest competitor, Jeff Melcher, Team Pedal Moraine, by more than three minutes. Melcher’s 56:56.30 garnered second place, while Travis Goodlund, Team Madcross, rounded out the Masters 40 to 44 podium with a time of 58:42.80.

The USA Cycling Wisconsin State Time Trial, which is contested each year as part of the Wisconsin Cycling Association calendar, was run on a 40-kilometer course (24.8 miles), southeast of Milton. Racers took off one at a time, with one minute separating each rider. The start line was positioned just southeast of the Townline Road, Highway M intersection.

The course traveled along Highway M for several miles before making a sharp right turn, which forced riders to exit their aerodynamic riding positions and pedal back up to speed. The riders then rode several more miles before making a U-turn and heading back on the same route.

There was only one report of a rider crashing at the time trial. A male racer hit the deck making the U-turn on the 40-kilometer course. No serious injuries were reported. There was also only one comment from race organizers that a rider took a wrong turn on the course.

The time trial also featured a shorter 20-kilometer (12.4 miles) course for juniors, mens Masters 65+ and womens Masters 55+ categories.
