A Frosty Reception

DELAFIELD — Six riders from KS Energy Services Team Wisconsin met at the Lumber Inn for some camaraderie and an attempt to get a little cold weather riding in.

Nick Frye, Mark Norton, Andrew Hellpap, Jason Kayzar, John Reynders and Briant Kelly met around 1 p.m., but as is usual with any group ride, not everyone was ready to hit the road.

Six riders met Saturday, March 5, in Delafield for some cold-weather riding and socializing; from left, Jason Kayzar, Mark Norton, John Reynders, Andrew Hellpap and Briant Kelly. Nick Frye attended the ride, but is not pictured because he was playing the photographer for this shot.

John was running a little behind and had no problem changing in the cold outside his car.

He also got the award for bravest rider of the day. John wore merely two wind vests, arm warmers and leg warmers. The rest of the riders donned base layers and jackets, not to mention shoe covers or boots — something else John did without.

Despite the cold, the six daring souls endured about an hour in the elements. The road conditions weren’t too bad; only a few snowy patches created some anxious moments.

Conversation was jovial and those who showed up seemed happy just to be out riding, as opposed to stuck inside on a trainer staring at a wall, listening to music, or watching a movie or television program.

While most of the riders weren’t expecting a workout, the 30 mile-per-hour wind gusts gave each cyclist the opportunity to push himself a little bit blocking for the small pack.

After a brief stop for a photo op, the group turned around about 30 minutes west of Delafield.

While rolling back into town, the motley crew was greeted by a young man walking along the street.

“You guys are crazy,” he said, with a laugh and look of disbelief.

Shortly after being welcomed into town, the bunch parked, packed up their bikes and walked over to Revere’s Wells Street Tavern for a few hearty beverages and some hot food.

Soon the talk turned from comments about the ride to the year’s cycling calendar and different dietary supplements.

The riders who showed up seemed to enjoy each other’s company; even the new guys appeared to feel welcomed.

And, soon the men were back in their vehicles headed for home.

Nick Fry, John Reynders and Andrew Hellpap enjoy the warmth and sustenance at Revere's Wells Street Tavern Saturday, March 5, after an hour-long ride in the 30-degree temperatures and high winds of a Wisconsin winter. The three were part of a six-man KS Energy Services Team Wisconsin team ride in Delafield.
